FBI Special Agent Kathy Adams (ret.) served in the Bureau for nearly thirty years. These days, she talks up recruitment.
Often, Adams says, people talk themselves out of looking into a career in federal law enforcement. “Some people may think they can never make it or they kind of stereotype themselves, and that’s an inhibiting factor.”
What makes a good candidate for the FBI?
“I think they have to have a hunger to learn. I think they have to take pride in their work. I would look for somebody that has initiative and can show their proficiency both getting through the academy and ultimately being assigned to a field office and carrying a caseload.”

Her assignments over a long career included a protection detail for former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, who Adams says was extremely personable and had a fondness for oyster and shrimp po’boy sandwiches.
