A national contest has scored an area charitable organization a sizable cash donation.
Krista Lisser, spokesperson for the organization says community support allowed the Central Illinois Foodbank to outrank larger cities in nationwide voting.
“The fact the central Illinois community came together and everyone voted,” says Lisser. “It means a lot to us. It was truly a community effort and that is what makes it so special.”
The foodbank will be given a $60,000 check from retail giant Walmart after an online contest placed the Springfield-based organization in the top 20 vote-getters in the chain’s fight against hunger.
She says the foodbank struggles in the weeks before the holidays and will use the money to help food pantries across central Illinois to restock their shelves.
