Tim Mapes, the former chief of staff to Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan, will serve prison time. The 68-year-old Springfield resident was convicted of lying under oath to a grand jury to protect Madigan, despite being under immunity. U.S. District Judge John Kness sentenced Mapes to 30 months in prison Monday.

Mapes was convicted on one count of attempted obstruction of justice and one count of perjury last year. Prosecutors pushed for more prison time, but his defense attorneys pushed for probation, according to our news partners at WAND TV. Mapes’ prison sentence will begin in mid-June.
