Pink is the “it” color this month and area doctors say even  if a woman doesn’t have health insurance, free mammograms are available.

The Simmons Cancer Institute’s Dr. Robert Mocharnuk says advances in mammography are helping women better fight breast cancer.

“Both Memorial and St. John’s have stepped up and are using what is called digital mammography which gives us a much clearer picture,” says Mocharnuk.  “Of course our employees are volunteering and the actual costs are being provided through the Komen Foundation through a grant.”

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, St. John’s and the institute are teaming up for the third year in a row to offer free mammograms to women over 40 who are uninsured or underinsured.  Mocharnuk says the hospitals are using the latest technology.

The free exams are available every Monday in October.  Appointments are required and are available through both St. John’s Hospital (217-757-6400 x3)  and the Simmons Cancer Institute (217-788-4042).
