The four Republican candidates for governor have differing opinions on passing a new capital bill.
State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) isn’t dismissing supporting a new construction spending program, but says he wants a longer 30-year plan to improve the state’s infrastructure. “Not a four-year (plan) for a governor’s term, but a long-term path,” Brady said.
Bruce Rauner is also avoiding outright support for a new bill, saying he favors exploring public-private partnerships.
On the other side, there’s State Sen. Kirk W. Dillard (R-Hinsdale), who supported last capital bill, which established the Illinois Jobs Now program. “I have been a major proponent of infrastructure, made some very difficult votes,” Dillard said.
State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is also in favor of a new capital bill.
All the candidates agreed on one point: their opposition to diverting infrastructure funds for other uses, such as social programs.
