Sangamon County Public Health Director Jim Stone says the county is grappling with a spike in Mumps cases.

“We’ve had 12 [cases] in the past 30 days, and over the last three years we’ve only had one case each year,” says Stone. “So it is a significant spike.”

Stone says it’s rarely a fatal disease, but it’s no fun. The 12 cases seen in Sangamon County have primarly been adults and half of them have been resolved. He doesn’t yet know if any of those with Mumps had been vaccinated.

Neighboring Morgan County has reported 40 cases.
