85 University of Illinois students took part in ‘Trick or Treat for Canned Goods’ on behalf of the Central Illinois Foodbank.
The 10th annual event was organized by the UIS Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center.
The young people divide into 6 teams and spent the week priorĀ canvassing assigned neighborhoods, hanging placards and letting folks know they would be back on Halloween to collect much needed items.
The teams are made up of fraternities, sororities, social clubs and educational groups.
The winning team, Necessary Steps, is made up of young people who are the first in their families to attend college. They collected 1,242 lbs. of food and other items.
Overall, the teams collected 5,455 lbs. of everything from peanut butter to chili to shampoo and diapers.
