SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Springfield-Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission (SSCRPC) and the Task Force for the Sangamon County Multi-Jurisdictional Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan want public input about their experiences with natural hazards including storms, tornadoes, and winter weather.

The public survey available on the Hazard Mitigation Plan website asks the public to gauge their experiences with a variety of hazards. The survey also asks the public to rate their preparedness for when hazards hit Sangamon County.

The survey is available until June 24, 2022.

The survey is part of the public involvement for the Sangamon County Multi-Jurisdictional Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan. A $65,041 grant from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) funds the planning process.

“The survey will provide valuable feedback from the public for use in the hazard mitigation plan,” said Molly Berns, Executive Director of the SSCRPC. “The feedback is also helpful because public participation makes the plan more robust and builds community resiliency to face natural hazards.”

A multiple community Hazard Mitigation Plan Task Force consisting of governmental entities, not-for-profit organizations, and other community groups was formed in March 2022. Communities with representatives on the Task Force are Springfield, Sangamon County, Auburn, Buffalo, Chatham, Curran, Dawson, Divernon, Grandview, Illiopolis, Jerome, Leland Grove, Mechanicsburg, New Berlin, Pawnee, Pleasant Plains, Riverton, Rochester, Sherman, Southern View, Spaulding, and Williamsville.

The public survey coincides with the third Task Force meeting on Thursday, May 26, at 5:30 P.M. in the County Board Chamber, 2nd Floor of the Sangamon County Building, 200 S. 9th Street, Springfield. The topics are risk assessment and goal setting. The public is encouraged to attend. The agenda for the meeting will be available at the Hazard Mitigation Plan website linked above and at: www.sscrpc.com.
