A visitor from another planet, were he or she or it to attend this week’s District 186 school board meeting, would think not much around here is more important than basketball.
“Well, I don’t know where your home planet is,” says superintendent Jennifer Gill, a proud Springfield Senator, “but we are very basketball-oriented around here. It’s more about the community coming out – retired educators, people who have been associated with the schools for years, that just love that event!”
“The cheerleaders, the poms, the bands, the drum line — there are a lot of students who make the City Tournament successful,” adds board president Mike Zimmers. “It is quite the spectacle.
Zimmers did not grow up here but is the parent of a Southeast Spartan alum.
The three-night event starts tonight, with the doors of the Prairie Capital Convention Center opening at 5:15pm.
