Because of a recent surge of scam artists working the phones and sending bogus emails asking for information, Sangamon County Undersheriff Jack Campbell says his department now has a hotline dedicated to handling just those type of complaints.

“We’ve seen an uptick of quite a few more of these types of cyber type of crimes.  We’ve seen text messages going out where people want to get your bank account information.  We’ve seen a lot of elderly people being contacted by someone who says they are a grandson or granddaughter and they are in jail and need money,” says Campbell.

Campbell acknowledges there is not much police can do but wants the hotline available so others may be warned.  The number for the Cyber-crime hotline is 753-NOTM(E)…753-6686.
