Chief Justice Anne M. Burke is announcing her retirement from the Illinois Supreme Court.

Her last day on the bench will be November 30.

Chief Justice Burke has served on the Supreme Court since 2006 and has served as Chief Justice since October 2019. Her term as Chief Justice concludes on October 25.

The Supreme Court has appointed First District Appellate Justice Joy V. Cunningham to fill the seat vacated by Chief Justice Burke.

Justice Cunningham, whose term is effective December 1, 2022, through December 2, 2024, will be the second Black woman to serve on the Illinois Supreme Court.

Justice Mary Jane TheisĀ  has been appointed to become the new Chief Justice.
