The longtime chairman of Illinois State University’s board of trustees has stepped down.

WJBC radio reports Michael McCuskey said Friday during a trustees meeting that he’s leaving the post he’s held for a decade. McCuskey also recently retired from his position as a federal judge in Urbana.

ISU President Larry Dietz called McCuskey a pillar of the university. McCuskey is a 1970 graduate of Illinois State.

McCuskey said he believes it is time to look for a new challenge. His term was to have expired in 2017.

Governor Pat Quinn will appoint a replacement for McCuskey. Trustee Ann Davis will serve as interim chairman until then.
