A member of the Illinois Supreme Court has presided over two same-sex weddings.

The two ceremonies performed by Justice Anne Burke included a double wedding last week at a historic mansion in Chicago. Burke is a Roman Catholic but says she doesn’t feel her faith “interferes” with her judicial responsibilities.

Illinois’ new law allowing same-sex marriage took effect statewide earlier this month. However, couples in some counties were able to wed earlier after court rulings. Burke’s view on same-sex marriage contrasts with the Archdiocese of Chicago. Cardinal Francis George was a vocal opponent of the legislation allowing gay couples to wed. Lawmakers approved it last year after an earlier attempt stalled.
