University of Illinois Springfield chancellor Susan Koch is elated by the decision to hire Timothy Killeen as the university system’s new president.

“He’s a first class scientist,” Koch says. “He has solid teaching experience, he’s a great leader. We’re really looking forward to the contributions he’s going to make as president of the University of Illinois.”

Koch says his connections in Washington, particularly in research, will help the university — she also says he has a good rapport with students.

Killeen comes to the University of Illinois from the State University of New York system; he’d also spent 20 years prior at the University of Michigan. He’s also a former assistant director of geosciences at the National Science Foundation.
