The third floor of the Illinois Executive Mansion is closed because of a badly leaking roof.
Authorities had to remove furniture from two historic bedrooms to prevent water damage. This year’s harsh winter and the 44-year-old roof are to blame, but there are no immediate plans for repairs. A governor’s spokesman says the leaking roof “is not an ideal situation,” but says maintenance work will be “deferred.”
Curator Dave Bourland says the water that’s seeping through the ceiling has caused plaster to fall. For now, floors are covered in plastic and he is using buckets to catch the water.
