Illinois lawmakers wrapped up their first full week in May without taking up looming major issues of this year’s session.

The General Assembly is tasked with deciding whether to extend the temporary tax increase that is set to roll back in January as well as approving a budget for the next fiscal year. Senate President John Cullerton says he’s confident he has enough votes in his chamber to pass a tax increase. But House Speaker Michael Madigan’s says he’s still working the roll call.

State agencies this week finished giving testimony to appropriations committees about the proposed impact of budget cuts, signaling the beginning of the next phase of budget negotiations.
