Pregnant women are already told to stay away from aspirin and ibuprofen. Now, new research from the University of Illinois suggests those women should add acetaminophen – Tylenol – to that list.

“We found that with more acetaminophen use during pregnancy, particularly during the third trimester,” said researcher Megan Woodbury, “children had language delays at age two and three; and then, at ages two, three, and four, we found that more use of acetaminophen during pregnancy, especially during the second trimester, was related to more attention problems.”

But so far, Woodbury says, the medical community has yet to embrace a ban on Tylenol for pregnant women. In fact, the pregnant Woodbury says, she takes acetaminophen herself to ease debilitating pain.

Woodbury now lives in Springfield and works remotely at Northeastern University in Boston.
