Springfield Mayor Mike Houston says he doesn’t want a Toronto Road liquor store to serve wine samples in a tasting area.
The city council approved the idea last month for Five Star Liquors, but Houston says this could open the door for a video gaming license — and could encourage other liquor stores to do the same.
“This is a package liquor store,” Houston said. “I think it’s simply an attempt to circumvent the intent of the state legislature and the gaming board.”
The store’s attorney vows to ratchet up support to override the veto, which needs seven votes. Houston doesn’t think there will be seven votes.
