Most major crime categories showed a decrease in the city.  But robberies climbed according to the latest Crime Statistics report released by the Springfield Police Department.

Deputy Chief Dennis Arnold says part of the increase from 2012 to 2013 could be related to a struggling economy

“Our calls for service went down by almost 4500.  Is there exact explanation for that?  No, but there are a lot of different factors but obviously, socio-economic issues are a factor any time we are talking about crime stats” according to Arnold.

Arnold says the number of burglaries decreased and that may be big ticket item purchases have been put on the back-burner for many households.
