There’s still no action on a proposal to hire NAPA Auto Parts to manage parts in Springfield’s new consolidated fleet garage. This time, the future of three non-union employees is the hold up.
Aldermen spent an hour discussing the contract, which would cost $3.5 million over three years.
“If this is the way we treat people toward the end of their career, I think we’re in a lot of trouble,” said Ward 1 Alderman Frank Edwards. “Because what else are we going to consolidate?
The city has come to agreements with most of the union employees who would be affected; negotiations with two unions are still ongoing.
The city’s Human Resources department says it’s possible the non-union workers will be without jobs, as there might not be something else they’re qualified for once the consolidation goes through.
