Sunday around 7:40 p.m., officers with the Springfield Police
Department Street Crimes Unit attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 3000 block of Sangamon Avenue.
The vehicle continued to travel west bound, disregarding traffic control devices and striking a vehicle in the intersection of Piper Road and Sangamon Avenue.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and identified as 26 year old Andrew Westrum of Springfield. At the time of arrest, Westrum was in possession of over 4 grams of crack cocaine, digital scales, 997.00 in currency, and two handguns.
Additionally he had two outstanding arrest warrants. Westrum and the occupants of the vehicle he struck were all treated for non-life-threatening injuries suffered during the crash.
Westrum was arrested for armed violence, unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm – No FOID, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and resisting or obstructing a police officer.
He is currentlyin custody at the Sangamon County Jail pending formal charging by Sangamon County State’s Attorney Dan Wright.The arrest warrants for Westrum were for defacing identification marks on a firearm (Menard County), and
contempt of court (Sangamon County).
