Springfield fire investigators are looking into what caused a blaze that killed one family pet and left the owner and another pet homeless Monday afternoon.

The fire began shortly before 3pm Monday afternoon while the man was gone.  He left both dachshunds in their cage in the house in the 200 block of White City Boulevard.

Firefighters were able to rescue one of the dogs.  The fire was extinguished a short time later.  The American Red Cross is providing assistance.
