The Illinois State Trooper who was shot late Tuesday night during a traffic stop in the 1600 block of Toronto Road is in serious condition, according to state police.

Police say the trooper is Dakota Chapman Green. He’s known as “Kody.”

State Rep. Brad Fritts (R-Dixon) paid tribute to Green on the House floor Wednesday. He said the wounded trooper is engaged to Fritts’ legislative aide.

The suspect, 37-year-old Cristobal Santana of Chicago, is believed to be wanted in connection with a recent homicide in Chicago.  WAND TV contacted Chicago Police who stated Santana has not been formally charged in connection with the homicide at this time.

ISP reports gunshots were fired during the interaction and Trooper Green was struck in the leg. Santana fled his vehicle on foot, but was taken into custody at 1:58 a.m. No other police officers were injured. Santana is also being treated for injuries at the hospital, ISP reports.
