Exit polls show that Illinois voters were deeply worried about the economy when they elected the state’s first Republican governor in more than a decade.

They also were willing to cross party lines, with some voters who said they’re not fans of the GOP casting ballots for Republican Bruce Rauner.

That’s according to exit polling conducted during Tuesday’s election for The Associated Press and television stations. Rauner defeated Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn by about 5 percentage points.

The poll also showed that while organized labor was Quinn’s largest source of campaign funds he wasn’t able to capitalize on the union vote as much as he might have wanted.

And voters were largely not swayed by the candidates’ attacks on each other’s ethics.
