SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) has released a facilities master plan and one central Illinois facility needs significant improvement according to the report developed by CGL Companies.
The report states that Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln was originally opened in the 1870s as the “Illinois Asylum for Feeble-Minded Children.”
An excerpt from page 76 of the IDOC Facility Master Plan.
The facility was transferred to IDOC in 1978 and was designated as a female-only facility in 2013.
In addition to a failing sewer system, most aspects of the facility were noted to be “severely deficient and need replaced.”
The report recommended moving the majority of inmates to another facility and demolishing deteriorated buildings.
Across the board, the level of deferred maintenance in the correctional system is at a critical level. IDOC has $2.5 billion in maintenance costs that are being put off, the highest of any Illinois state agency.
