More changes are in the works on a bill that would change the funding formula for public schools in the state.

One change adopted Thursday in an Illinois Senate committee would be a $1,000 cap on the loss that a school district would have per student. Overall, the bill is meant to distribute state aid in a way that benefits impoverished school districts the most.

The sponsor, State Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill), says some legislators would see their schools lose money, but a more fair way of distributing state aid is needed.

“We have severe challenges ahead when it comes to a more equitable way to distribute money in the state,” says Manar.
