The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department is helping residents sign up for concealed carry permits online, even though the state says paper applications will be accepted.

“This will be during business hours only in our lobby,” says Undersheriff Jack Campbell, noting only existing staff and resources will be used. “We’re going to use our I.T. people to come out and assist with the process. They seem to be able to kind of navigate the system a little bit better than even just our average administrator or one of our records clerks.”

Campbell says the service will be crucial through July, when the state will begin accepting paper applications. He says it’ll be important to call the sheriff’s office in advance at 753-6891, as some features might not yet be ready.

Campbell also says the sheriff department’s program will be crucial through at least the first half of 2014, as paper applications won’t be accepted until July.
