Sangamon County became only the second county in the state to be designated a “Purple Heart County.”

A resolution was unanimously passed by the county board Tuesday night and the Order of the Military Purple Heart’s Bob Cowles says the designation will be instrumental in getting a planned memorial built at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

“We have a memorandum of understanding with Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and now we have the design of it approved,” says Cowles.

Cowles says they have raised a little more than half of their goal to erect the memorial that will be placed among the other war memorials at Oak Ridge.
