A state lawmaker wants to change the start of firearm deer hunting season.
State Sen. Dave Luechtefeld (R-Okawville) has introduced a bill, which he hopes to call for a vote soon, that would delay the start of firearm deer season from the Friday before Thanksgiving to the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
The reason: Luecthefeld says kids are missing school to take part in that opening Friday.
“Many times if you have 30, 35 percent of your students out on a particular day you really don’t get a whole lot done,” said Luetchefeld. “You can say you’re going to have classes but not much happens.”
Luecthefeld suspects many hunters would have shot a deer Saturday or Sunday and wouldn’t need to go hunting Monday – meaning more kids would be in the classroom.
