Republican Mike Bell has conceded in the race to incumbent Democrat Sue Scherer.
Scherer won the race with 55 percent of the vote.
“We have a great team who put in a lot of long hours and hard work to keep this campaign moving forward,” said Bell in a statement. “Unfortunately, this time the results didn’t come in on our side. I’d like to thank the thousands of Central Illinois residents who supported us and our message of real reform and economic growth for this district and the entire state.”
Sue Scherer was first elected in 2012 with financial and in-kind support from House Speaker Mike Madigan, who considers the 96th an important seat to maintain.
