It’s an honor usually reserved for major dignitaries, or when the Governor wants to give a speech — not a major award!

Illinois lawmakers led their colleagues in song, and were the first to see the Chicago Cubs’ World Series Trophy during its visit to Springfield.

“It’s my understanding that joint sessions are relatively rare,” says Tom Ricketts, Cubs Chairman, to the Illinois General Assembly. “It’s also my understanding that people rising in bipartisan support is pretty rare, too, so I’m real impressed by that. Thank you.”

Jeff Higginson of Fancy Prairie was the first to see and get his picture taken when the trophy arrived at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

“I had a friend come and stand for me [in line since 5am],” says Higginson, who is disabled. “I guess I contributed to the delinquency of a minor. I had a high school kid skip school to stand in line for me.”

Even as the public viewing started, there was a line of people stretching almost all the way around the museum to get in, and even as the viewing started a half-hour early and featured a surprise guest: Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg.

Here is a report from the museum with WTAX’s Will Stevenson.

Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg posted for photos with fans and the World Series trophy.
