Most major crimes have declined in the last year and Sangamon County Undersheriff Jack Campbell says the Drug Interdicition Response Team, or DIRT, has played a big role.

“We just recently reported that every reportable index crime in Sangamon is down and the DIRT team has made a direct impact on that” says Campbell.

DIRT was put back on the streets a year ago after being dormant due to lack of money.

Campbell says there were no meth arrests in the past year, but says heroin is becoming more popular.

He says the three deputies that work the detail have seized 60-thousand dollars in cash, four vehicles, and several weapons.  Campbell says those seizures help fund the cost of the team.
