Springfield voters in April will weigh in on whether township borders should stop at the city limits, as opposed to overlapping.

Township officials were in the council chambers Tuesday night to speak against the proposal, arguing in part that the assessment and general assistance services they provide are services the city doesn’t.

Said Springfield Township supervisor Gary Budd, “You guys can’t take care of what you’ve got!”

Mayor Langfelder pushed this measure and voted with the 6-4-1 majority. Council members voting No were Chuck Redpath, Kristin DiCenso, Erin Conley, and Ralph Hanauer. Ald. Jim Donelan voted Present.

The vote was to place a non-binding referendum onto the ballot. Before the boundary changes could be made, the Illinois General Assembly would have to get involved.
