SIU School of Medicine Included in National Alzheimer’s Study

A national study testing a new drug to treat Alzheimer’s disease will soon be underway at the SIU School of Medicine.

It’s called NOBLE. Dr. Thomas Ala says there is a lot of optimism the medication could be a big step in slowing Alzheimers’ progression.

“Animal models have showed that if you have a rat, and you infuse the toxic chemical into the rat, the rat’s memory is impaired and the brain cells die,” says Ala. “This drug helps to protect [against] the damage from that toxic chemical.”

Ala says the SIU School of Medicine is looking for volunteers who have been diagnosed mild to moderate Alzheimer’s to participate.
