Smoking is way down – and vaping is way up – among people ages 18-29, according to a new Gallup survey.

Anne Scheer, a child sociologist at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine’s Department of Population Science and Policy in Springfield, says the data are unclear as to whether vaping leads to smoking, but she does say about vaping, “Safer does not mean safe.”

Of course, the best way not to get addicted is not to start in the first place.

“Addiction is a complex phenomenon. It obviously has its physical and genetic components,” said Scheer. “Addiction, in its complex dimensions, also has social aspects. You start to get used to doing things in certain social settings, and they acquire meaning in those social settings.”

For example: that group of people huddled outside the workplace, smoking and bonding.
