One day after the University of South Carolina won the women’s college basketball tournament, an Illinois House resolution commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Title IX ran into some opposition the sponsor likely did not expect.

Title IX paved the way for women and girls to play school sports.

After asking what “LGBTQI+” means, State Rep. Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) asked sponsoring State Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville) for the definition of a woman.

“I really am just shocked that there is opposition to supporting something like Title IX,” Stuart responded. “Your line of questioning is offensive. Offensive.”

“Okay,” Wilhour answered. “You still didn’t answer the question: What’s the definition of a woman?”

This came after Republicans shouted, “NO!” when Stuart made a customary motion for all representatives to be added to the resolution as co-sponsors.

Eleven members voted against it, and forty did not vote at all.
