Illinois Conservation Police officers issued 23 citations to hikers who ventured into restricted areas at Starved Rock State Park during the holiday weekend.

The DNR warns visitors that some areas of the park remain closed after storms a week ago created dangerous conditions. Hanging limbs and damaged trees could fall and cause injury. Officials say crews are cleaning up the areas quickly.

Signs have been installed to alert hikers to closed trails.

The trail to Starved Rock is open, along with the Illinois, Ottawa and Kaskaskia Canyon trails at the park’s east end. Trails at nearby Matthiessen State Park are open.
