The Illinois Department of Transportation is completing design work for a major upgrade of South 6th Street.

Project Engineer Linda Mlacnik says there is major unknown factor for the 20-million dollar project; money has not yet been identified.

“I guess if we find out today we had funding, we could start in three years. It would be two construction years for sure to complete” says Mlacnik.

Lanes in both directions will be added and intersections reconfigured between the I-72 interchange north to Standford Avenue.  Tens of thousands of commuters use the route in to and out of the city each day. More public meetings will be held
