Although Southeast High School is showing some improvement in math scores, Principal Jason Wind told school board members students are struggling with reading.
Grant Middle School principal Tammie Bolden, who has a child at Southeast, doesn’t understand why the school doesn’t apply for a federal grant.
“This school is ranked in the bottom 5-percent of the state. Test scores have dropped for the past six years. Although the school has qualified for 6-million dollars for a School Improvement Grant for four years, the district has failed to complete the same forms that they completed for Lanphier High School,” Bolden told board members Monday.
While reading scores at the school have fallen from last year to this, math scores are improving.
Wind explained the staff wanted to chart their own improvement course rather than rely on the federal government who then dictates how to improve academics.
Southeast’s graduation rate is 61-percent compared to a state average 83-percent.
