Officer William Meacham received the Life Saving Award while Union Pacific Employee Nathan Gutmann received a Civilian Certificate of Appreciation.
Both men were recognized by the Springfield Police Department for saving the life of a suicidal man on February 1st.
SPD says Meacham responded to a call around 11:15am of man who was about to jump off the railroad overpass in the 1700 block of Sangamon Avenue.
Gutmann had already engaged with the man, attempting persuade him not to take his own life.
When the man attempted to lunge off the overpass, Officer Meacham grabbed him and pulled him back with the assistance of Gutmann.
The man was taken to the hospital for necessary medical attention.
The Springfield Police Department extended it’s gratitude toward Meacham and Gutmann for their extraordinary bravery.
