State Police say they believe they have dismantled a multi-state theft ring with two arrests that resulted from a traffic stop a week ago along I-55 in Montgomery County, about 30 miles south of Springfield. A trooper pulled a rental car over for speeding, and, a news release continued, his instincts told him something was not right.
Facing charges are the driver, Shawn Thomas, 51, of St. Louis, and the passenger, LaTonya Jackson, 34, also of St. Louis. Police say both women had outstanding warrants from both Illinois and Missouri.
Police say the car was being sought in connection with a department store theft in Marion, with two subjects fitting the descriptions of Thomas and Jackson. Police say the duo is suspected of organizing “a large retail theft ring” about a year and a half in duration.
The news release did not name the trooper whose actions are lauded.
The investigation continues.
