Thirteen years after the 2001 terrorist attacks, Gov. Pat Quinn says those who lost their lives are not forgotten.
Quinn says Patriot Day is not just for remembering those killed in the terrorist attacks, but also for those in the military who lost their lives in the wars that followed those attacks.
“It’s important for us to remember. We can never, ever forget,” Quinn said at a ceremony at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “It’s our duty, the living, to remember and carry on the wonderful life of service of these men and women who wore the uniform of our country.”
Two service members from the state died in the attacks, both at the Pentagon. Since Sept. 11, 2001, 326 Illinois men and women have died serving in the military in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Governor candidate Bruce Rauner attended a remembrance ceremony today in Lockport.
