Springfield Public Works Director Mark Mahoney says he is pleased with his department’s response to the first major winter storm this year.

He says his headcount is down by about 30 people from a couple of years ago but is confident his crews will handle whatever the weather delivers.

“We are doing the best we can but when you have these kind of conditions, every storm is a little bit different so you try to adjust as best you can and deal with what you get” says Mahoney.

Mahoney says the city has more than 30 peices of equipment to  clear city roads during peak hours.  Public works employees are also clearing sidewalks downtown but asks business owners to help keep them cleared and salted.
