The Fayette County coroner is reporting that three members of an Illinois family were killed when their SUV was struck by a freight train at a crossing in Vandalia.
Coroner Bruce Bowen said late Thursday the victims were an adult female and two children, a boy and a girl. He did not release the names of the victims, nor their ages.
Two people were injured in the accident and airlifted to a nearby hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.
The accident occurred around 7 p.m. near where the city of Vandalia was conducting its annual Halloween Parade.
Authorities haven’t revealed what led to the accident.
