Most Illinoisans probably know the name Tammy Duckworth. But far fewer probably know the incumbent Democrat U.S. senator is up for re-election this year.

Kathy Salvi (pictured), one of seven Republican candidates in Tuesday’s primary, included Springfield on a downstate campaign swing Thursday. Salvi said while the war-wounded Duckworth has earned commendation for her military service, she’s spent ten years on Capitol Hill, and it’s time for somebody else.

“This election will be a referendum on the failed leadership of (President) Joe Biden, and Tammy Duckworth has voted nearly 100 percent of the time (with) him,” said Salvi, a Lake County-based lawyer. “Take the fact that she sits on the Armed Services Committee, and she’s silent. When we had that botched Afghanistan withdrawal, not a peep out of her.

“Is that what we expect from a U.S. senator? I’d say, absolutely not!”

Salvi said the age and condition of our locks and dams, the price of gasoline, and the baby formula shortage are all problems for which Democrats must take the blame.

Salvi’s husband is Al Salvi, a former state lawmaker and two-time statewide candidate.
