University of Illinois scientists are wading into the dispute over a plan to store toxic waste at a landfill located above an aquifer supplying drinking water to more than half a million people in central Illinois.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing the plan, and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has also taken action to try to stop it.
Gary Miller is associate executive director of the research institute.
He says the scientists will look at alternatives that could include incineration, and chemical and biological methods.
