It was mixed reviews on day one of SMTD’s new transfer center, still under construction on 11th between Washington and Adams, where  staffers were on hand to assist riders as needed Monday.

The center had been operating from a nearby temporary location since late summer.

With shelters forthcoming, many patrons said they are looking forward to gradual improvements that will, ultimately, culminate in what’s being called “The Hub,” an $86 million project expected to bring together a variety of transportation services all in one place, including Amtrak, by 2025.

Sooner still, by the end of this year, phase one will be complete.

But not all riders were praiseworthy. “To me, it seems like a waste of money. The real issue is with the routes and how SMTD seems to listen to everyone except those who actually ride the bus.”

SMTD recently received $1.4 million from the State for its part in “The Hub” project and for the remodel of its maintenance facility.
