Not every court case is neatly wrapped up in less than an hour.
“If a defense attorney has information or by their observation believe their client is not fit to stand trial, then they will request a fitness evaluation. That happens in cases, it’s not unusual.”
Milhiser is talking specifically about the case against Jacob Stark, whose trial was continued until January as his defense team seeks to determine whether he’s fit to stand trial.
Other cases continued today: a murder on South Wirt Ave., the theft case against the former director of St. John’s Children’s Hospital and the Lanphier High School student accused of bringing a gun to school.
Milhiser will not speculate on the mental fitness of any defendant and says he will continue to vigorously prosecute those cases that he says have merit.
