The University of Illinois Springfield set an enrollment record this fall.

Chancellor Susan Koch says 5,431 students were enrolled after the first ten days of classes. That’s the most on record but it’s far below the enrollment at either Urbana or Chicago. Koch says that’s how it will stay.

“One of the great things about the University of Illinois enterprise is that you’ve got a wide variety of wonderful, wonderful choices,” she says. “For many students, both undergraduate and graduate, they want to be in a little bit smaller environment where they feel like there’s a more supportive community.”

Koch says the number of international students has spiked significantly, and on campus housing is near capacity. She says the university is looking to build more housing across 11th street.
