A community task force is considering ways to revitalize the University of Illinois’ airport outside Champaign.
The task force plans to make recommendations for Willard Airport by the end of the year.
According to The News-Gazette in Champaign, Urbana-Champaign campus Chancellor Phyllis Wise asked the task force to develop a business plan for the airport. The airport is in Savoy, just outside Champaign.
The task force’s draft report indicates that hiring an outside manager might be a good move. Right now the university runs the airport.
Rebranding and better marketing are also possibilities. The task force found that most people in the area who travel by air fly from Indianapolis.
Another recommendation is trying to add an East Coast destination. Currently the airport offers service to Chicago and Dallas.
